JOHANNESBURG – Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that Olympic athlete Mbulaeni Mulaudzi has been killed in a car crash.

This has also been confirmed by his agent Peet van Zyl.

Mulaudzi was a South African middle distance runner and the 2009 world champion in the men's 800 metres.

He carried the South African flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Mulaudzi became South Africa’s first black athlete to be ranked number one in the world.

His first international medal was a silver at the 2000 African Championships in Athletics.

Van Zyl says thisis one of the saddest days for South African sport and South African athletics.

“Mr Mulaudzi was surely one of the most decorated track athletes that South Africa has ever seen and unfortunately never had the recognition from the federation for all his achievements, so it’s indeed a sad day.”
