Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday extended condolences to the families of those killed and injured in a bus crash on the R40 near White River in Mpumalanga.
"I wish to express, on behalf of government and the people of South Africa, our heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of the victims. May their souls rest in peace," Zuma said in a statement.
Ten people were killed and 40 were injured in a collision between a truck, an SUV, and a bus around 18:45 on Wednesday.
It was reported that the truck driver lost control of his vehicle and partially collided head-on with the bus and then a Toyota RAV 4 crashed into the wreckage.
All vehicles were burnt almost beyond recognition.
"We are really saddened by this horrific loss of life on our roads," Zuma said.
‘One life too many’
Government strongly urged all motorists and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road and drive responsibly at all times to prevent further accidents of this nature.
"We also wish all those who were injured a speedy recovery," he said.
The Democratic Alliance's deputy leader in Mpumalanga Jane Sithole expressed her party's sadness at the accident and extended its condolences to the families of those killed.
"One life lost on Mpumalanga's roads is one life too many, and the DA thanks every emergency response person that assisted on the scene last night to prevent the further loss of lives," she said in a statement.
Earlier, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said the Road Traffic Management Corporation had dispatched a national team of investigators to join the police investigation.
"This is deeply shocking and saddening and our condolences go to the families bereaved. My fervent wish is for those injured to recover speedily," she said in a statement.
"I call on all South Africans to spare a thought for all affected, the law enforcement officers, and emergency rescue services who are all out to do their best under the circumstances.
"The national department of transport will work closely with the provincial department and make sure that the provincial capacity is not found wanting in this situation," she said.
