Popular Radio DJ admitted killing to friend - police

Neighbours look on as a woman’s body is removed from one of the flats in Jabulani, Soweto.

Soweto – A Soweto radio DJ who is on the run for allegedly stabbing and killing his 32-year-old girlfriend, confessed to her friend before he fled, police said.

"We are still looking for him, we hope to make a breakthrough very soon," police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said.

Police said the woman was stabbed several times and locked into a flat in Jabulani on Sunday.

"The man then phoned the girl's friend and told her he killed the woman," said Makhubela.

Jozi FM station manager Mpho Mhlongo said they did not know the man's whereabouts and called on him to hand himself in.

"This will enable the judicial process to run its course and closure can be found for the families, relatives and friends on both sides."

Mhlongo said the station was committed to gender equality and the protection of women and children.

"We convey our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of the woman who died in this very tragic way."

Drug-smuggling Australian sentenced to death

Big image
Hanoi - An Australian of Vietnamese origin has been sentenced to death after trying to smuggle 4kg of heroin out off the country, state media in the communist nation said Saturday.

Pham Trung Dung, 37, was caught with two suitcases containing the drugs at Tan Son Nhat airport in May last year while trying to return to Australia with his wife and children.

Dung told a court in southern Ho Chi Minh City that he had been promised $40 000 by two unidentified men to transport the drugs, an online report by the Tien Phong newspaper said.

Vietnam has some of the world's toughest anti-drug laws. Anyone found guilty of possessing more than 600g of heroin, or more than 20g of opium, can face death.

Earlier this month, six people from a 25-member smuggling gang were handed death sentences for smuggling 620g of heroin and 1 400 ecstasy pills in northern provinces.

In January authorities sentenced 30 smugglers to death in the country's largest ever narcotics case, involving scores of defendants and nearly two tonnes of heroin.

According to media reports and an AFP tally, Vietnam has more than 700 prisoners on death row.

Many have been sentenced for drug offences including dozens of foreigners - although it has been decades since a foreign citizen was executed.

Young people must become entrepreneurs - Minister Zulu

Pretoria - Minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu, says young people should not only be encouraged to become entrepreneurs, but everything possible should be done to help them.

Addressing a Youth Business Forum, she said: “It’s 30 years since our freedom, but the participation of young people in South Africa was still less than adequate.

“Empowering young people is not an option, but a national imperative, because about 77% of the population is aged between 1 and 34.

Job creation

“Youth unemployment constitutes 73% of the total unemployment in the country and employment of young people aged between 18 and 24 years has fallen by more than 20% since December 2008.”

Referring to entrepreneurship, Zulu said that young entrepreneurs would get abundant opportunities to grow and develop their enterprises in an environment that nurtured the development of these enterprises and enhances their job creation potential.

“We will work with the DTI to ensure that the revised BBBEE Codes are used as an additional measure to encourage private sector to pursue measures that are aimed at growing youth enterprises and cooperatives.

“Working in partnership with all stakeholders, including youth entrepreneurs, we will begin to develop a plethora of programmes, both financial and non-financial, to assist our youth enterprises and create opportunities for job creation to reduce youth unemployment.

Radical policy

“ We’re convinced that if we are to make an impact on the job creation front, the common problems faced by SMMEs must be addressed. Among others, these are

*  lack of a favourable legal and regulatory environment;
*  lack of access to markets and procurement;
*  lack of access to finance and credit;
*  low skills levels;
*  lack of access to information and
*  shortage of effective supportive institutions.

“We have no doubt that the much-needed economic growth and employment opportunities will come from a radical policy that enables small businesses to thrive and grow into profitable enterprises,” Zulu said.

Mobile ransomware (virus) targets English speakers

Big image

Cape Town - A new piece of malicious software for mobile devices is specifically targeting English speakers, a security company has revealed.

Kaspersky Lab reported that Svpeng which is known in Russia, has been directed to the US and the UK.

"For now, this piece of malware, allegedly of Russian origin, does not steal credentials, but it is only a matter of time, since Svpeng is just a modification of a well-known Trojan that operates in Russia and is used mainly for money stealing," said the company.

The malware of part of the group known as ransomware because the software is capable of locking down devices and demanding payment.

When this type of malware hit computer users in the Commonwealth of Independent States, people were forced to pay between €100 to €300 to have their computers unlocked, though the cyber criminals still have remote control.

Payment demand

Kaspersky warned that the malware could potentially be devastating to file encryption on mobile devices.

"Additionally the Trojan’s code contains some mentions of the Cryptor method which was not used yet, so it is likely that soon it will be utilised for file encryption. In this case Svpeng will become the second most well-known mobile malware, with such functionality after Pletor, which appeared in the wild in May 2014."

Svpeng locks mobile devices after scanning for financial applications on a victim's phone. It uses a fake FBI penalty notification letter to demand payment of $200 in Green Dot prepaid MasterCard and Visa cards.

Kaspersky Lab tests a variety of devices and software for security at its Moscow offices. (Duncan Alfreds, Fin24)

"It is impossible to repel an attack of American Svpeng if a mobile device doesn't have a security solution - the malware will block the device completely, not separate files as Cryptolocker did. If it happens to you, you can do almost nothing," said Roman Unuchek, senior malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

The malware is responsible for 91% of attacks in the US and UK, the company found, indicating that it could migrate to other English-speaking countries and territories.

Unuchek said that there was a slim chance to fix a mobile device infected with the malware identified as Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS.Svpeng.a.

"The only hope for unlocking the device is if it was already rooted before it was infected. Then it could be unlocked without deleting the data. One more option is to remove the Trojan, if your phone wasn’t rooted is to boot into “Safe Mode” and erase all data on the phone only, while SIM and SD cards will stay untouched and uninfected."

Pressure mounts on Zuma to rescue economy...Zuma's address to parliament in Cape Town is due to start at 19:00.

Big image
(AFP)
Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma delivers the first State of the Nation address of his second term on Tuesday, under pressure to outline plans for reviving growth and creating much-needed jobs in Africa's most advanced economy.

double blow from ratings agencies last week underlined the precarious state of the economy, which contracted in the first quarter. South Africans will also be closely watching Zuma himself after he was hospitalised this month with fatigue.

The 72-year-old was quickly discharged after "routine tests", his office said a week ago. However, he handed over the reins to his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa for five days to give himself time to recover from the rigours of preparing for the May 7 election.

Zuma's African National Congress (ANC) won a 62% majority in the vote, the fifth since the end of apartheid in 1994, but the ruling party has had little to cheer about since the result.

A five-month strike in the platinum mines is dragging the economy towards recession and the impact on broader growth and government finances prompted Fitch to put South Africa on a negative outlook and Standard & Poor's to cut its credit rating on Friday.

Hitherto, Zuma had relied almost exclusively on a National Development Plan (NDP) drawn up in his first term as his broad blue-print for promoting long-term growth.

Analysts said the president also needed to address the deep mistrust that exists between the government, unions and the private sector if the NDP - which requires the cooperation of all three entities - is to have any chance of success.

"Does the government want to bargain with the business sector and other interests to chart a new path for the economy, or does it believe it can fix its problems on its own?" political analyst Stephen Friedman wrote in the Business Day newspaper on Tuesday.

Standard & Poor's downgrade means South Africa could even lose its coveted investment grade credit rating if growth fails to pick up. S&P's outlook is stable for now, indicating it is not looking at cutting its rating again soon but investors will want reassurance that the government is committed to steering the economy back to health.

The economy has been further strained by a cold snap at the start of the southern hemisphere winter and outages at some power generation units, which led to temporary rolling blackouts to prevent the already stretched national grid from collapsing.

"Much of the debate wants to hear an address that does not 'waffle' about policy but promises to 'get things done'. But if that is all we hear, we are likely to remain stuck where we are," said Friedman.

Zuma's address to parliament in Cape Town is due to start at 19:00.

Some of Nigeria's kidnapped girls 'may never return' Abasanjo said

Big image

Abuja - Nigeria's former president Olusegun Obasanjo told media some of the schoolgirls kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram in April may never return, in the most pessimistic comments yet on their fate from a member of the political elite.

Obasanjo said President Goodluck Jonathan's administration had taken too long to respond to the mass abduction. Once Jonathan's mentor and one of his strongest political allies, Obasanjo turned against him in December.

"I believe that some of them will never return. We will still be hearing about them many years from now," Obasanjo told the BBC's Hausa-language radio service on Thursday, in comments echoed in an interview with Nigeria's Premium Times website.

Army's failure to rescue the girls

The warning from Obasanjo, who stepped down in 2007 but remains an influential figure, will dismay parents who have now waited 60 days for any news of their daughters, taken from a school in the village of Chibok on 14 April.

Obasanjo's criticisms underline divisions within Jonathan and Obasanjo's ruling People's Democratic Party, heightened by the government and army's failure to rescue the girls, and by presidential elections due in 2015.

"If you get all of them back, I will consider it a near-miracle ... Do you think they [Boko Haram] will hold all of them together up till now? The logistics for them to do that, holding over 200 girls together, is too much," Obasanjo said, according to Premium Times.

"If the administration had acted quickly, we could have rescued them," he said.

Obasanjo, twice president and a powerful political godfather who nurtured Jonathan's own rise to power, has progressively fallen out with the current president. In a letter leaked in December he said it would be "morally flawed" for Jonathan to seek a second term in a 2015 poll.

SA minibus taxis to get free Wi-Fi

Big image
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has announced an ambitious plan to roll out a free Wi-Fi programme for commuters.

The project is expected to be implemented within three years and be available around taxi ranks and in vehicles, according to a report on IOL.

Santaco said that fares will not increase as a result of the Wi-Fi offer, and this is similar to Prasa (the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) which recently launched free Wi-Fi at Cape Town train station.

These moves are a reflection of the number of people who are making increasing use of smartphones to access travel information and transact online.

As more people make use of mobile internet services, huge data growth is expected in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Data appetite

According to data from Ericsson's Mobile Data Traffic Growth report for 2013 to 2019, the region's data appetite is huge and expected to grow at 65% to 2019 and beyond.

Put into perspective, mobile data in the region was at 37 000 terabytes (TB) per month in 2013, and that will jump to 76 000TB by the end of 2014, on its way to a mammoth 764 000TB by the end of 2019.

Major centres have also begun rolling out Wi-Fi services.

Pretoria has launched a Wi-Fi programme that will ensure that all residents are covered with free internet access.

"In the next eighteen months, the City of Tshwane will expand the project and roll out about 600 additional Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Tshwane, prioritising institutions of learning," Alan Knott-Craig jnr, the brains behind Project Isizwe told News24.

Michael Jackson's children spend $8m a year

Big image

Los Angeles - Michael Jackson's children spend up to $8 million a year.

The late King of Pop - who died of acute Propofol intoxication in 2009 - left behind children Prince, 17, Paris, 16, and Blanket, 13, who have allocated finances for their living expenses which are separate from the $1m plus their grandmother Katherine receives to watch over them.

According to the New York Post's Page Six, Prince's $30 000 yearly tuition at a private school and the six-figure annual sum for Paris to stay at a therapeutic boarding school in Utah following her 2013 suicide attempt, are among the expenses.

A family insider also claims Prince has spent more than $50 000 on custom-made jewellery and other gifts to give to at least three different girlfriends.

The children enjoy up to three holidays a year to places such as Hawaii and Las Vegas, which cost about $350 000, including payments for bodyguards, family members, chauffeurs and first-class travel.

Meanwhile, Paris buys gifts for her friends at school and Blanket spends $200 an hour for karate lessons and more for a personal trainer.

The three also have a chef to whip them up meals at their $26 500-a-month rented mansion in Calabasas, California and they often dine out at trendy restaurants.

A source said: "These things that they're doing they are mostly paying for themselves, with their own money. Look, they also get $15 000 to $20 000 every month just in walking-around money. No one else has that kind of dough around here."

"This is why you have had so much of the fighting going on in the family. But the battles have calmed since their uncles have finally found consistent work and everyone has pretty much left [Katherine] alone about money."

But the source insists although the children spend a lot of money they know when they're splashing out too much.

They added: "They're not [as bad] as their father [at spending money]... They also seem to have more of a sense as to when they may be going overboard."

Don't expect bribes, warns Ramaphosa

Big image
ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa (AFP)

Johannesburg - Public servants should not expect bribes, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday.

"Public servants should not expect to be paid a bribe for executing the tasks that they are paid a salary for," he told delegates at the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) special congress in Benoni, on the East Rand.

He called on them to serve the country with pride and dignity at all times.

"We need to recognise that we wear a badge of honour to serve our people."

Ramaphosa said a good public service was needed for government to effectively implement the National Development Plan.

"Workers in the public service should work hard and inspire young graduates to take up careers in the public service," he said.

Griekwastad killer does cry, says granny

Big image

Kimberley - The young Griekwastad killer does show emotion, but not in front of others, the Northern Cape High Court heard on Friday.

"He does experience emotions, but people differ," the 17-year-old boy's grandmother told the court. She cannot be named to protect his identity as he is a minor.

She was being questioned by Riaan Bode, for the boy, during arguments in mitigation of sentencing.

"You would not see me easily in tears, others, you give them a look and they burst out in tears."

She told the court the boy cried, but not in front of others.

On 27 March, the court found the boy guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14. They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on 6 April 2012.

"Everyone wants the truth"

The boy was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to the police.

Reading out a prepared letter to Judge Frans Kgomo, she said: "Everyone wants the truth of what happened that day. We want closure."

Emotions around the event ran deep and it was difficult to find the right words for it.

"My salvation is with me. My road I must walk alone," she told Kgomo.

After listening to expert evidence she said she still believed the boy was innocent and that the tragedy was due to him suffering a major lapse in character.

"Forgiveness is possible"

"I plead with the court that he gets the needed treatment to be able to rejoin society later."

Asked by Bode if she would ever pardon the boy, she said one should not use the word forgiveness lightly.

"I believe forgiveness is possible in this process, but it will be a painful process. One will have to have a profound discussion with oneself to get direction. Time will tell."

The State did not cross-examine her and Bode concluded his evidence in mitigation.

The matter continues.

Zuma saddened by Mpumalanga crash

Big image
President Jacob Zuma (File, Sapa)
Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday extended condolences to the families of those killed and injured in a bus crash on the R40 near White River in Mpumalanga.

"I wish to express, on behalf of government and the people of South Africa, our heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of the victims. May their souls rest in peace," Zuma said in a statement.

Ten people were killed and 40 were injured in a collision between a truck, an SUV, and a bus around 18:45 on Wednesday.

It was reported that the truck driver lost control of his vehicle and partially collided head-on with the bus and then a Toyota RAV 4 crashed into the wreckage.

All vehicles were burnt almost beyond recognition.

"We are really saddened by this horrific loss of life on our roads," Zuma said.

‘One life too many’

Government strongly urged all motorists and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road and drive responsibly at all times to prevent further accidents of this nature.

"We also wish all those who were injured a speedy recovery," he said.

The Democratic Alliance's deputy leader in Mpumalanga Jane Sithole expressed her party's sadness at the accident and extended its condolences to the families of those killed.

"One life lost on Mpumalanga's roads is one life too many, and the DA thanks every emergency response person that assisted on the scene last night to prevent the further loss of lives," she said in a statement.

Earlier, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said the Road Traffic Management Corporation had dispatched a national team of investigators to join the police investigation.

"This is deeply shocking and saddening and our condolences go to the families bereaved. My fervent wish is for those injured to recover speedily," she said in a statement.

"I call on all South Africans to spare a thought for all affected, the law enforcement officers, and emergency rescue services who are all out to do their best under the circumstances.

"The national department of transport will work closely with the provincial department and make sure that the provincial capacity is not found wanting in this situation," she said.

Horror Mpuma crash: 10 burnt beyond recognition

Big image
(S Hammond, Sapa)

Johannesburg - Ten people who died in a horror crash near White River in Mpumalanga on Wednesday evening were burnt beyond recognition, says a spokesperson for the provincial department of community safety, Joseph Mabuza.

A bus, taking commuters to Bushbuckridge, caught fire after a pile-up which also involved a truck and a car.

At least 40 people were injured in the crash.

"As we speak I'm on the scene. Ten people have died and we have lots of people being taken from the bus to hospitals.

"We hope no one else dies as there are many people here," said Mabuza.

The R40 was closed in both directions and traffic was being directed via the Numbi Gate road.

Mabuza said the injured were transported in a helicopter and ambulances to Rob Ferreira Hospital and MediClinic in Mbombela, as well as Themba Hospital in Kabokweni.

He said initial reports indicated the truck driver, who was travelling from Hazyview, lost control of the vehicle and hit a Great North Transport bus, which was travelling from Mbombela.

A RAV4 off-road vehicle was also involved in the collision.

The bus burst into flames and only 17 passengers are reported to have escaped before the blaze started.

One bus passenger, Sindy Ndlovu, was taken to Themba Hospital and said she could recall little about the accident.

"What I know is that there was a truck and a car behind us. I'm now at Themba Hospital. I don't know much. I'm going for X-rays now," she said.

Johannesburg - Heroin with a street value of about R48m has been recovered from a house in Crown Gardens south of Johannesburg, the Hawks said on Monday.

The police’s elite crime-busting unit conducted a raid on the house just before midnight on Sunday when they found the drugs, Captain Paul Ramaloko told News24.

A 42-year-old Pakistani man was arrested and will appear in court on Tuesday.

“We are confident that we could disrupt a heroin distributing network,” Ramaloko said.

Ramaloko said more arrests were expected as the man was suspected of being part of a syndicate.

Two unlicensed firearms were also recovered from the house.

Psychiatrist's Oscar diagnosis causes panic

Big image

Johannesburg - A psychiatrist's suggestion that Oscar Pistorius had generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) at the time of shooting his girlfriend has sparked panic amidst the disorder's sufferers, the Sunday Times reported.

The SA Depression and Anxiety Group's director Cassey Chambers told the newspaper that it had received "hundreds of calls" from people who were concerned that having the disorder could lead to "unpredictable, unstable and violent" behaviour.

"We have had people asking if their loved ones with GAD need to be hospitalised immediately."

Chambers said that the chance of sufferers of the disorder turning violent were slim.

"Anxiety is an introspective issue and sufferers of GAD are highly unlikely to be dangerous to others," she said.

This week, Pistorius - who has been charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp - began a 30-day mental evaluation at the Weskoppies psychiatric hospital in Pretoria.

Postponed until June 30

Pistorius, a Paralympian, was admitted as a day patient by the hospital following an order by Judge Thokozile Masipa in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

The ruling came after a defence expert witness testified that the 27-year-old, who has admitted to shooting Steenkamp, suffers from generalised anxiety disorder.

Masipa said the evaluation would determine "whether he was capable of appreciating the wrongfulness of his act or acting in accordance with appreciation of the wrongfulness of his act".

Pistorius shot dead Steenkamp through the locked door of his toilet in his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day last year. He has denied guilt, saying he thought she was an intruder about to open the door and attack him.

The State contends he shot her during an argument.

He is also charged with three contraventions of the Firearms Control Act.

The case has been postponed until 30 June.

Justin Bieber tells racist joke in video

Los Angeles - Justin Bieber is seen telling a racist joke in a controversial video which has surfaced online.

The Boyfriend hit maker appears in the clip joking with friends and uses the "N word" five times after asking them: ''Why are black people afraid of chainsaws?''

One friend repeatedly warns the pop star: ''Don't even say it. Don't say it,'' but he laughs and decides to deliver the punch-line, saying: ''Run n****r, n****r, n****r, n****r, n***r.''

A female friend, who cannot be seen, then tells him: ''You could say motorcycle too'', before making revving engine noises.

The 20-year-old singer is thought to have been 17 when the moment was captured on camera during filming for his first documentary Never Say Never in 2011.

According to The Sun on Sunday newspaper, Justin and his management have known about the video for a while and tried to pay for it to be kept out of the public eye.

A source said: ''This video is Justin Bieber and his camp's worst nightmare. Even after the year he's had - when he's never been far from controversy - this tops it.''

Justin was arrested in Miami in January and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), resisting arrest and possessing an invalid driver's licence and he was later accused of attempted robbery after a woman claimed he grabbed her mobile phone while she was trying to take a photograph of him.

The new video is likely to anger a number of African-American artists, who have helped him to become a global superstar and supported him throughout his career, including Usher, will.i.am and Will Smith.

The source continued: ''Justin has been taken under the wing by some of the best in the industry and they won't stand by him after this.

''This will be a real kick in the teeth - showing his true colours on film.

''He's made millions from working with musicians from all ethnic backgrounds. Having this attributed to him will do him no favours in the future.

''This could be the end of the road for him if artists refuse to work with him based on this. And it sets a seriously bad example to his impressionable young fans.''
