Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, as his trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp started in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday.

Pistorius also pleaded not guilty to discharging a firearm in a public place, and to contravening provisions of the Firearms Act.

The proceedings were delayed due to an interpreter problem, but started at around 11:33.

The 27-year-old is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home last year.

The proceedings in the wood-panelled courtroom will be broadcast live on television and radio, with the initial indictment listing 107 witnesses to testify for the State.

The trial is expected to last at least three weeks.
